Is counseling right for me?

This is a question many people ask themselves, but seeking counseling for the first time can be intimidating. If you have been down, stuck, misunderstood or would like to accomplish your goals but aren’t sure how, counseling can be a great avenue. People come to a counselor for a wide variety of reasons. This could be self-exploration, grief, anxiety, loss, depression or even a mental health diagnosis. A counselor is someone you can trust and that can help you get through hard times and sort through your feelings. A counselor is here to listen to you and validate your feelings in a non-judgmental environment. Therapists can help you find new ways to overcome obstacles and create plans to achieve your goals— whatever they may be.

Anxiety

Anxiety can manifest in nervousness, worry and self-doubt. It’s common for any person to feel anxiety, but some people get overwhelmed or consumed by anxiety and it can have devastating effects on their day-to-day lives.

Counseling provides relief for anxiety, give you an outlet to express those thoughts and feelings. Therapists can give you tools to better manage anxiety and help you find ways to overcome these feelings.

Depression

Depression is a common condition, but it can be a serious matter that requires counseling. Long periods of depression can have affect on all aspects of a person’s life, and in extreme cases can lead to thoughts of suicide.

While not all depression is not always that serious, and depression is a treatable condition. Speak to a therapist if you are feeling depressed and need help managing those emotions and finding ways to improve your life.

Grief & Loss

Grief is commonly associate with the loss of a loved one, but it can be the result of losing anything (relationships, jobs, etc). Grief has a wide range of feelings from sadness to anger and the process of adapting to loss and vary from one person to another.

A counselor is likely to be able to help you learn to cope with your loss through relaxation and meditation techniques. Grief can effect the whole family, and each person may react differently. Family therapy can be helpful addressing these situations.

Abuse & Violence

Abuse comes in many forms. We often associate abuse with physical violence, but people suffer from verbal, emotional & sexual abuse as well. It’s important to recognize the signs of abuse and to act on them.

A good rule of thumb is if you are questioning whether or not you are in an abusive situation, you likely are. Seek help from a qualified therapist, or if you feel you are in immediate danger call 911.

Behavioral Issues in Kids

Behavioral issues are common in children & teens. Some of this behavior is typical, but it could stem from underlying issues or a diagnosed condition that requires therapy or medication. No one wants to hear they have a diagnosis, but speaking to a therapist can give you clarity and insight into the behavior.

Only until you can recognize and address the issue(s) will you be able to begin the work to resolve them. We offer therapy for children starting at age 5 up through teens.

Parenting

Being a parent is a difficult job, and each family is different. Seeking counseling for parenting related issues is a sign of strength and determination to have a happy and healthy family.

Counseling parents isn’t a situation where you can “fix” someone. There are however proven skills, tools and communication techniques that can help you improve the relationship with your children.

Marriage Counseling

Marriage Counseling is a great way to help your marriage or relationship grow and strengthen. All serious relationships are susceptible to periods of strain, in fact, it’s very common— everyone goes through these times.

Marriage and couples counseling can help you learn techniques to become better communicators and find ways to work through issues that may be making your relationship difficult.
